About
My introduction to systems theory in counseling began when I attended a Family Constellation Therapy group in my local community. The experience changed how I understood therapy. It showed me how deeply family roles, loyalties, unresolved experiences, and intergenerational patterns can shape our lives. On a personal level, the work also helped me achieve meaningful healing within my own family-of-origin system.
What struck me most was the experiential nature of the work. This was not simply talking about family dynamics or gaining insight. People could engage in deep family-of-origin work without their family members being present. The system could be brought into the room, experienced directly, and worked with in real time.
I began applying some of these systemic and experiential concepts in individual sessions, and the response was immediate. Clients became curious, began researching the approach, and wanted to go deeper. I was eventually given the opportunity to facilitate an experiential Family Constellation group in a residential treatment setting. The response was powerful. Clients would often remain well beyond the scheduled end of group, giving up limited free time simply to continue the work.
Discovering Internal Family Systems (IFS) brought the next piece together. Family Constellation work gave me a framework for understanding the family system around us, while IFS provided a compassionate and practical way to understand the internal system within us. As I progressed through IFS Levels 1, 2, and 3 training, I saw a significant increase in my effectiveness as a therapist and began hearing clients describe tangible, lasting changes beyond the therapy room.
This led me to bring the same experiential structure into IFS group work, allowing participants to not only talk about their internal system, but to encounter and work with it directly. The response was remarkably similar.
Today, I integrate Family Constellation Therapy concepts with the IFS method in both individual and group settings. The goal is not simply to help someone cope with symptoms. It is to understand the system producing and maintaining the pattern, work with that system directly, and create meaningful change throughout the person’s life.
THE FAMILY SYSTEM we originated from
shapes our Internal SYSTEM that Drives US
THE SECOND WOMB
We are born into a family before we have language, independence, or the ability to choose. From birth through childhood and adolescence, our family of origin functions as a kind of second womb—the relational environment in which our identity, nervous system, understanding of love, and sense of belonging begin to take shape.
Within this system, we learn roles, rules, loyalties, and ways of adapting. We discover what brings connection, what creates conflict, what must remain unspoken, and which parts of ourselves are welcome. These adaptations are often intelligent attempts to preserve safety and belonging.
Ideally, growing up includes two important developmental movements. Individuation allows us to develop a stable identity and become our own person. Differentiation allows us to remain emotionally connected to our family without being governed by its anxiety, expectations, roles, or unresolved burdens. From this position, we can enter the world, establish our own life, and create relationships and families shaped by conscious choice.
For many people, this process was interrupted or never fully supported. We may have left home physically while continuing to carry the family system internally. Its roles can become protective identities. Its rules can become inner rules. Its unresolved pain can become emotional burdens. Its conflicts can reappear as polarization within us and repetition within our adult relationships.
FAMILY CONSTELLATIONS + INTERNAL FAMILY SYSTEMS
Family Constellations and Internal Family Systems approach this work from two complementary directions.
Family Constellations helps make the larger relational system visible. It can illuminate inherited roles, unconscious loyalties, exclusions, unresolved losses, and patterns that may extend across generations.
Internal Family Systems reveals how those experiences became organized within the individual. It helps us understand the protective parts, vulnerable parts, burdens, inner rules, and conflicts that continue to carry the family system forward.
When these approaches are combined, the family system around us and the internal system within us can be understood as one connected, adaptive whole. The work can then support healing and realignment in both systems—placing responsibilities where they belong, releasing burdens that are no longer ours to carry, restoring internal cooperation, and strengthening Self-leadership.
The goal is not to reject the family, erase the past, or create separation through emotional cutoff. The goal is to establish a healthier relationship with where we came from so that it no longer determines where we must go.
BELONG WITHOUT LOSING YOURSELF.
SEPARATE WITHOUT CUTTING OFF.
HONOR WHERE YOU CAME FROM—AND BUILD A LIFE THAT IS YOUR OWN.
